Types of wasps

Wasps are commonly found in many areas of the world, there are many different types of wasp, the can differ dramatically in appearance and habit. They belong to the insect order Hymenptera, suborder Apocrita, it is neither a bee or an ant. The most common and familiar wasps belong to a sub division of Apocrita called Aculeata, and often have a venomous sting, although many types of wasp do not sting.

The suborder of Aculeata contains Bees and ants, and of course many types of wasps are often mistaken for bees and vice versa.

The many types of wasps fall into one of 2 catagories, solitary and social wasps, the differences are fairly simple the solitary wasps tend to live alone and belong to no social network, whilst the social wasps operate as part of a colony that can number several thousand. Its the social wasps that of course build and live in the large and commonly found wasps nests. The bulk of the population of such a nest is made up by infertile females, with the males mating with the fertile queen wasp.

Solitary wasps are generally more diversified compared to social wasps. Their nests could be found almost everywhere in the walls, in the trees or even in the ground. Solitary wasps would usually build a nest made of mud where they deposit an egg. They do not make a hole on the wood but creates a small nest that would be enough for a single egg and leave them until they are ready to come out. Just like their eggs, the behavior of solitary wasps is also individualistic. They do not go out in groups but instead roam around alone.

Social wasps on the other hand create a hole wherein they could deposit as many eggs as they can. They also have a direct interaction with their eggs as they grow. Whenever there is an attack, they would come out to defend their nests in groups. They are usually considered more dangerous because of they attack in groups. On the other hand, eradicating social wasps is a lot easier because they live in a single nest compared to solitary wasps that could be anywhere.
